Where your home gets listed when you sell with an agent: HAR, Zillow, Realtor.com

Short answer: When you list with a Houston agent, your home is entered into the HAR multiple listing service (MLS). From there it typically shows up on HAR.com, other agents' and brokers' websites, and major sites like Zillow, Realtor.com, Redfin and Homes.com, usually within a day or so. That one MLS entry puts your home in front of thousands of local agents and buyers.

Step 1: The HAR MLS

The Houston Association of REALTORS® runs the MLS for the Greater Houston area. It's the database agents use to search for homes for their buyers. When your home is in the MLS:

  • Thousands of local agents can see it and set up alerts for their buyers.
  • Buyers who've set up saved searches get notified automatically.
  • Your listing details, photos and showing instructions are shared consistently.

Step 2: HAR.com

HAR.com is one of the most popular home search sites in the Houston area and shows MLS listings directly. Many local buyers start their search here.

Step 3: Zillow, Realtor.com, Redfin and more

MLS listings are typically shared with the big national sites, including Zillow, Trulia, Realtor.com, Redfin and Homes.com. That's where many out-of-town buyers and relocating families search.

Step 4: Broker and agent websites

Through a system called IDX, MLS listings also appear on thousands of real estate company websites, including ours. Search homes on our site, and you'll see the same MLS listings.

Other marketing a good agent adds

  • Professional photos, video and 3D tours
  • Social media posts and targeted ads
  • Email to local agents and past clients
  • Open houses and signs

Can you keep your listing off the big sites?

Some sellers want more privacy. Since 2025, national REALTOR® rules give sellers some options, such as delaying when a listing appears on public websites. But there are trade-offs:

  • Less exposure can mean fewer buyers and potentially a lower price.
  • Zillow's rules: Zillow has said that if a home is publicly marketed without being on the MLS within about a day, it may not show that listing on Zillow at all.

For most sellers, maximum exposure gets the best result. Talk with your agent if privacy is important to you.
